The village is located in the centre of the Hérault department, 50km west of Montpellier and 17km north-east of Béziers. The town of Alignan du Vent is south of the Departmental Road No. 13 connecting Bédarieux to Pézenas.
In 2013, the municipality had 1652 inhabitants for 17.3 km2. Its inhabitants are called the Alignanese. The town is located in the heart of the Languedoc vineyard (wine-growers' cooperative of 1936), about twenty kilometers from the Mediterranean and 7km from Pézenas. The windmill, of which only the ruins of the tower remain, now houses the reception room of the municipal swimming pool. During the medieval period, the inhabitants gathered around the "castrum" under the authority of the lords of Servian. The village develops slowly, with the construction of the fortifications according to the circular pattern, with the Visigoth Tower in the center. The village quickly acquired its Romanesque church.
