City Culture

The town of St Chaptes is located between Nîmes, Alès, Uzès and Anduze. With its fountains, its stone houses of the Gard and its two castles, it is a typical town of the Southern Cevennes.

The Gardon de Saint-Chaptes is the union of the Gardon d'Alès and the Gardon of Anduze. It has often been the source of tears, fears and destruction because of its "gardonnades", the violent and sudden floods of which the oldest known, dates from 1403 !

The village, which had no spring and whose great wells did not resist the great droughts, was to be satisfied with its corrupt water and Thyphoid fever during these periods, around 1850, wreaked havoc among the inhabitants. A neighboring village, St Drézéry, on the contrary, possessed more water than needed. It took several years, however, for him to yield the closest source to St-Chaptes.

St-Chaptes is a mainly agricultural village, cereals and vineyards sharing alluvial lands. In 1858, the sericulture industry "summed up all the riches of the locality". Unfortunately, phylloxera for vines, pebrine and silkworms, have ruined many farms.

In the past, there were three renowned fairs in St-Chaptes, and if the village prides itself on its "fairground", it now welcomes only the market on Thursday morning, local events and of course the Votive Feast of late August. They are then varied shows, balls contests, bull races and talented orchestras that during a week drain a dense and joyful crowd.
